An ultrasonic scaler consists of a wand with a small scaling tip that produces a soft vibration with a gentle flow of water.

It is effective in removing heavy, moderate or light build up of tartar above and below the gum line.

The tip is moved slowly along the tooth’s surface and gum line. The vibration of the instrument breaks up the plaque and tartar that sticks to the teeth resulting in a more thorough cleaning.

In cases of moderate to heavy build up the ultrasonic scaler may be followed by a regular hand scaling instrument for fine scaling of any remaining tartar.

Hand scaling involves the use of specialized cleaning instruments called scalers, which come in different shapes and curvatures to match the natural anatomy of the teeth. They are used by carefully scraping the deposits with a gentle to moderate amount of pressure. The goal is to obtain a clean and smooth surface.

By relying on their tactile sense to locate and remove food particles plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line the dentist can bring the gum tissues back to a state of overall health.

Hand scaling and polishing, also known as dental prophylaxis make up the components of a regular cleaning.

The dentist uses specialized instruments to gently remove tartar that accumulates on teeth between cleaning visits without harming the teeth.

Once all the surfaces are smooth you may have your teeth polished. Polishing is done using a slow speed handpiece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end, along with special gritty toothpaste like material. Polishing serves to remove the final bacterial film that forms naturally on the teeth.

A routine scaling and polishing is an excellent way to establish a healthy baseline of cleanliness in the mouth.
